MEDAWISLA
Legend has it that the word
"Medawisla" derived from the Abeneki Indian language of New England. Medawisla was a term used to describe
the Common Loon as "The Great Northern Diver"

NOTE OF INTEREST
I have named my cottage on the West Shore of Groton Pond, "Medawisla". This is in keeping with my passion
for the loons , and commitment of being a volunteer for the Vermont Loon Recovery Program, that is now called Vermont
Ecostudies..
Recently, Eric Hanson, Loon Biologist, put out a question
to all his volunteers....What good is a Loon ? This was my answer.
WHAT GOOD IS A LOON
The Common Loon plays an important ecological part in our world
that we don't want to lose. All life has a place on this earth and if we were to lose this species, we would lose
a most important part of our wildlife, and we don't want that to happen. A
living link to the days of the dinosaur, dating back millions of years ago. A creature that man can still experience
in this present day world.
One of the few wild creatures that has not been fully
controlled, domesticated or raised successfully in captivity.
A beautiful, priceless,
irreplaceable asset.
