Retrieved the dead osprey reported by Bill Murray last night. It's a juvenile hanging by its talons from the insulator of utility pole 41R opposite the WSA east fence. It's likely a bird fledged from the nearby WSA#4 nest, but a head count of the WSA nests was inconclusive. Follow up: PSNH removed the osprey from the pole on 08/11. It had been electrocuted & had burn marks on both feet. It is currently in the refuge freezer awaiting a trip to the taxidermist & then on to Parker River NWR, where it will be used as part of an educational display at refuge headquarters.

Thanks to Scott Standley for reporting osprey activity in wetlands off South Road in North Hampton. They've been seen for the past week or two. It doesn't appear that they've set up a permanent occupation of a large nest used by Great Blue Herons in 2007. Could be a young pair getting acquainted with each other. If they decide to nest here this year or nest it contains what appears to be a well made 'starter home' for them.

JO found a dead osprey just north of the end of Depot Rd in Hampton Falls. 05/09 JO & DH examined it & found it a little 'fragrant'. It was a male with an obviously broken neck & was missing about 9 inches of its left wing. There were no other signs of trauma and no leg bands. The carcass was only a few feet west of the power lines coming from Seabrook Station. He must have flown into the power lines. Bird was not from either the Landing Rd or the Blackwater nest sites as they had a full complement of birds, plus one rather aggressive bird harassing the F in the Landing Rd site. Carcass was delivered to PEA ornithology lab.
