SQUAMSCOTT SITE LOG

PM
A bird flew onto the nest (don't know if it was the M or F).  Sat on the edge of the nest & then disappeared into the nest.  The nest seems to slope towards the back because I could see it clearly on the edge & then it almost looked like it was gradually stepping down into the nest till it disappeared.  Only stayed ~5 minutes or so as it was cold & raining.  It probably doesn't mean a thing but I just wanted to let you know.

13:00 Returned to Squamscott nest & the object had disappeared.  Slight show of something black on the left side of the nest.  Both birds flew in while we were there & perched on the crossbeams.  Neither went near the nest.

19:00 Both M & F were on the cross beams of the pole & there was a very large black object sticking out of the nest.  It did not move in the breeze.  Have no idea what it was.

10:30 2 osprey on platform nest; M flew up to make sure passing eagle did not bother anyone.  M escorted the Imm eagle away, but not closely.

16:42 F sitting on the side of the nest & M perched at the end of the platform perch stick.  F flew to the crossarm near the M & both preened & hung out until I left at 17:10.

10:45 F on the nest just sitting on the edge.  M flew in & perched on the crossbar underneath the nest.  We watched for ~15 minutes.  M left & F was still just sitting on the edge of the nest.  We left due to the rain.

16:30 Nest appears empty, but there is what appears to be a dark plastic garbage back popping up out of the nest.  16:30 M flew to perch on the crossarms of the nest poles to preen & just look around.

12:15 M observed circling over river near nest site & finally flies over to nest platform to perch on edge.  Remains at nest site for ~4 min. & flies off in direction of Great Bay.  Did not observed F at nest.  Nest is very large & deep; F could be in nest, but could not observe.  Observations made from parking lot.  12:35 M returns to nest & perches on edge of platform.  Still did not see F.

MS
~05:30 1 osprey seen.

DH
17:19 M standing high in the nest, then flew SW toward corn field & OOS beyond trees.  17:39 M back to nest, standing high on side & working on something in the north end of the nest.  He then climbed up on north side of the nest for a few minutes then made a brief flight landing on the crossarm on the north side of the nest poles.  Again no other osprey activity at or in the nest.  Looks like the nest has failed.

14:55 M? on side of nest, then flushed as 3 mosquito larva samples from Dragon Mosquito Control take their samples somewhat close to the upriver side of the nest poles.  M returned to perch at 15:18 to preen.  M flew toward bay at 15:45.  No other activity seen at/in the nest.

17:00 No sign of osprey - I assume there is one sitting very low in the nest.  17:12 M arrived at the nest & worked for ~4 minutes moving sticks around on the top of the nest.  This activity induced F to sit a bit more erect in the nest showing her head.  M flew & F repositioned so only her tail is showing.  17:24 M returned to the nest carrying a very small fish? which F took to a mound on the marsh SE of the nest poles.  After ~2 minutes F defecated then flew toward the corn field - maybe to the 3-poles.  M now incubating.

DH
17:13 F sitting high in middle of nest.  M alternately perched or flying around the area.  He spent much time preening on the platform perch and also on a low post at the base of the nest poles.  M also made a trip downriver & returned with marsh grass which he plopped in the nest.  At 18:51 M landed on the side of the nest: F rose, flapped her wings once, then flew down to land on the marsh near the base of the nest poles.  M took over incubation duties.

16:15 Observations made from parking lot; F? sitting deep in nest, just head & back visible.  No M observed.  16:25 Left area. F still deep in nest.
