THE HISTORY OF THE SHEPARDSON FAMILY OF ROAYLSTON, MA.
Information Compiled By: Francis Wayland Shepardson, John Eaton Shepardson, and Daniel Scott Shepardson, and many others.

UPDATED: October 23, 2006

Sometime in the year 1628-9, from what ship no record remains to tell, Daniel Shepardson landed at Salem, Mass., being one of a numerous company who sought homes in America at that period of English history. A tradition indicates that he was accompanied by his brother, John, who soon died of lockjaw as a result of a dispute in which a spade was thrown at him by his adversary. Daniel is believed to be the son of Thomas Shepardson [b.c. 1575], who stayed in England. There is the belief that Daniel was born circa 1600-1612 in Leicestershire, England in the parish of Kettleby. Some of the immigrants moved to Charlestown where Daniel Shepardson is recorded as a citizen in 1632. He was not one of the wealthy members of the Puritan body, but was a craftsman, a blacksmith by trade. Town records indicate that Daniel Sheperdson owned property in Malden, MA as early as 163819.

The place of his origin is not known, but members of the family are to be found in Yorkshire, England, now (1907), and, as the name indicates a Scandinavian ancestry, he may have been from that part of the country.

He was not an educated man, but he had so much company in that plight among the early Americans, that it is not specially to his discredit that his will is acknowledged by a cross, with "the marke of Daniell Sheopardson" beneath it. Like most of the Puritans he was intensely superstitious, a believer in signs and omens, and when one day, as he was working at his forge, a stone fell from it and crumbled into powder, he recognized the evil portent and gave to his wife the nails which he was just making, saying, "They will come in handy some day." The nails were kept, and when he died, in Malden, Mass., 26 July 1644, they were used in the making of his coffin. He had a comfortable home with three acres of ground around it, his blacksmith shop, and fifty acres of pasture and meadow land, scattered here and there, so that his widow, Joanna, who had the use of the property during her lifetime, was quite well fixed for a woman of the day. His family comprised a son, Daniel, and two daughters, Lydia and Joanna.

When the children were ready to marry, Daniel married Elizabeth Call; his sister, Lydia [Elydia19], married Elizabeth's brother, Thomas Call, Jr.; and after the death of their father, their mother, Joanna Shepardson, married the father of the Call children, Thomas Call, Sr., so that the relationship became a little mixed.

An abstract of the will and the inventory of the estate of this pioneer Shepardson have been printed as well as certain orders of the General Court about his property. [In N. E. Gen. Hist. Soc. Reg.]

The second Daniel followed the trade of his father, making his home at Maiden, Mass., for some years. His name appears as one of a number who signed a petition to Sir William Phipps, 17 October 1694, praying to be permitted to establish a settlement at Attleboro, Mass. He seems to have owned land there as early as 1660. He took a prominent part in the town affairs. With this removal from Malden the Shepardson family found its home in a tract of land called "Rehoboth North Purchase", which included what later became the towns of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Attleboro, Norton, and Mansfield, Mass., places in which the family has been represented almost continuously for more than two hundred years.

The early records of Attleboro, Rehoboth, and Cumberland seem faulty and there is considerable confusion in the first few generations, but there is every indication that all Americans named Shepardson may be traced back to Attleboro, except a few recent immigrants from England.

He removed to Attleboro where he had fifty acres about half a mile from "Old Town" on the Bay Road. He lived to an advanced age and was long called "old goodman Daniel Shepardson". Luke’s grandson Daniel E. Shepardson tells a story of how the family was displeased with Luke’s choice of a girl friend. When Luke was working on the crews that were building the Hoosac Tunnel he would stay near the job site during the week and come home on the weekends. (The Hoosac Tunnel, is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century, 1855-1875. The tunnel was dug 4.75 miles through Hoosac Mountain, linking Massachusetts to Albany, NY. 200 men lost their lives building the tunnel, which is still being used today.) Luke was seeing a girl that lived in Fitzwilliam, NH and when he came home to the farm in Royalston on the weekends, he would travel by horse and buggy up to Fitzwilliam to call on her. The family did not approve of this girl and made their opinions well known. Luke’s sister Delia was one of the most outspoken of the family in her dislike for this girl. Luke had stopped seeing the girl in Fitzwilliam and started calling on the Rev. Tandy’s daughter, Ellen, who lived just up the road. The two families were well acquainted and the Shepardsons loved Ellen Tandy as another sister. Luke and Ellen carried on their relationship in secret for some time, all the while allowing people to believe that Luke was still going to Fitzwilliam. One weekend, before he left for the week to return to the tunnel, Luke announced to the family that he was to be married the following weekend and the family was invited. Luke didn’t say otherwise and the family assumed that the bride was to be the girl from Fitzwilliam. The family’s dislike of this Fitzwilliam girl affected their choices in wedding gifts. Luke’s sister Delia gave the couple just a simple dried flower arrangement. When the day of the wedding came the family was shocked, and Delia mortified, to discover that the girl Luke was marrying was their beloved Ellen Tandy from up the road. Delia now wished dearly to replace the dried flower arrangement with something more ornate but Luke would have none of it. As a constant reminder to Delia and the rest of the family of their behavior, Luke prominently displayed the dried flower arrangement on the fireplace hearth in the living room of the farm where everyone would see it. The arrangement stayed in that location until the day that Delia died in 1929.

26. DANIEL EDGAR SHEPARDSON  Photo  (Carl-10, Luke-9, Eri-8, Daniel-7, Jonathan-6, Jonathan-5, Nathaniel-4, Daniel-3, Daniel-2, Thomas-1) was born 14 January 1918 in Athol, Mass.. He married ESTHER HAMMOND WHEELER  Photo on Sep. 20, 1941.  She was born March 28, 1918 in Concord, NH.

When Daniel was a child he was sent Royalston to live on the farm of his grandfather, Luke Bemis Shepardson. When his uncle John Shepardson hanged himself in the barn at the farm in Royalston, and young Daniel discovered the body. The story in the family is that John was so ashamed of his sister Lucy for marrying Levi Cook that he killed himself. Levi Cook left his first wife and several children to marry Lucy. Lucy, Levi, and John are all buried in the family cemetery in Royalston. Daniel and Esther are both graduates of the University of Massachusetts and that is where they first met. After graduation Daniel worked as a Chemical Engineer and Esther taught Science and Biology at Athol High School for almost 20 years; Daniel is a 4th generation member of the Masonic lodge, Star Lodge, of Athol. During World War 2 Daniel was approached by a government agent and asked if he wanted to work on the “Manhattan Project”. Daniel discussed the new job prospect with Esther and they decided to decline the offer. They did not want to live in Manhattan. It was not until after the war that they discovered what the Manhattan Project really was: the secret project to build the first atomic bomb and had nothing to do with Manhattan, NY. Daniel had a pilot’s license and flew single engine aircraft during his college days and for Civil Defense. He once flew his plane under the French King Bridge in Gill, MA that spans the Connecticut River. The new marriage between Daniel and Esther almost ended as quickly as it started. Right after they were married, the two of them went down to the local airport where pilots were taking turns flying a new plane. Dan and Esther waited for their turn and took the plane up. However, as soon as they were airborne the plane began to sputter as it had run out gas! Dan was able to bring the aircraft around and land it in a field on the back part of the airport. After she was married, Esther went by the name of Esther Wheeler Shepardson.
