Letters to the Editor, 2008:

To the Editor:

For years, Seth Berry has been inspiring the young children of our school district to learn at SAD 75.  Over the past two years, his performance as House District 67 representative has demonstrated his own commitment to learning.  After only one term in office, Seth has a remarkable grasp of issues important to Mainers, and the legislative process.  His website, www.sethberry.org, demonstrates his deep understanding of the complex issues that challenge our state.  Seth is knowledgeable and practical.  I trust him to make sound judgments that will serve our district well in these challenging times and believe he will be a strong leader in the House if re-elected.

To the Editor:

Dear Residents of District 67 (Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Richmond, Perkins Township):

If you are sitting on the fence this election year and haven’t decided who to vote for as our State Representative, I would highly recommend that you cast your ballot for Seth Berry, of Bowdoinham. Seth is truly a legislator for the people of our communities. He is very much in tune with the issues that are important to us and affect our daily lives. Seth is an “accessible” legislator and willing to speak with his constituents on a personal, one-to-one, level.

Among the myriad of woes currently facing our state, I am also very concerned about the welfare of equines in Maine. Seth attended an Animal Welfare Committee meeting with me, so he could see first hand how mismanaged this program is. Seth cared that I cared. We have had several conversations on this topic and Seth will keep an open ear for me when legislation arises concerning the equines, as well as other animal welfare issues.

Time lost from work to attend the AWP meetings $150, gas money to drive to the meetings $50, having my legislator care about a cause dear to my heart ...... priceless.

If you are searching for genuine representation in the Maine House of Representatives, I cannot endorse Seth Berry enough! Please get out and vote!

To the Editor:

Representative Seth Berry has aptly served as our legislator representing Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, and Richmond for the past two years. He is a strong advocate for sustainable energy and conservation. His expertise on utilities and energy issues afforded him the opportunity to serve on the Joint Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy. One important success of that Committee was to bring Maine into a ten-state compact to drastically reduce CO2 emissions from large electricity generators.

During his first term, he successfully sponsored many crucial measures including reasonable nuclear waste oversight in Wiscasset, cleaner and more efficient wood heat related to economic development, a better coordinated mental health policy, greater social security equity for Maine public employees and taxpayers and new rules to protect Maine telephone consumers.

Seth Berry is the kind of representative we need in Augusta. He understands the needs of Maine people, has a strong sense of community and is dedicated to making a difference. He is passionate about environmental issues and education, and understands how to approach these issues from a pragmatic, yet all encompassing perspective.

It is my hope that the citizens that he has represented so well during his first term will re-elect him.

To the Editor:

As a young Mainer, I am very concerned about the challenges that face our state and our country right now. The economy is in shambles, global warming is a serious threat, health care and higher education have become privileges instead of rights, good jobs are getting scarcer and scarcer, and bitter partisan bickering and self-interested politicians are compounding these crises.

We are very lucky here in District 67 to have someone willing to tackle these issues with energy, common sense, and vision. In his past term as our state representative, Seth Berry has demonstrated that he is able to make real progress and find constructive solutions that benefit both his constituents and the whole state. In short, Seth is an example of what a great politician should be.

So on November 4th, go out and vote for Seth Berry!

Sincerely, Pippa Stanley

Richmond

To the Editor:

Seth Berry has served Bowdoinham, Bowdoin and Richmond well for the past two years.  He has saved us considerable money by getting Congress to repay huge amounts of social security money to Maine that they had kept, identifying errors in our telephone rates, and ensuring more transparency for new tax incremental financing,

What’s most important to me is how accessible Seth is.  We see him at all town events, he is easy to reach by phone or email, and I always feel comfortable discussing my concerns with him.  I am supporting his bid for re-election as our state representative, and I urge my fellow citizens to do the same.

To the Editor:

Generally speaking, I am no fan of election season candidate endorsement letters to the editor.  With a few exceptions, and with sincere respect and appreciation for those who make the effort to participate in the democratic process, to this ear, most such letters mirror the largely predictable, partisan blather the public is typically subjected to by political campaigns.

Accordingly, when I was asked to consider writing a letter in support of Seth Berry’s run for reelection, I thought hard before doing so.  I write because I trust Seth’s heart and intellect to put up a struggle when he finds himself sucked into the partisan blather that characterizes much of what passes for the people’s business in Augusta.

The good news, I think, is that most legislators on both sides of the aisle have a sincere desire to do some good for the people of Maine.  However, in order for that spark of good to ignite and fulfill its promise in the face of the dominant, partisan political culture’s emphasis on the preservation of power and narrow, selfish self-interest, we need legislators of heart and intellect representing us.

I don’t know Seth’s opponent and expect he too is an honorable man.  I have, however, had the opportunity to talk to Seth several times since his first run for office.  Based on those conversations and Seth’s consistent responsiveness, I remain cautiously optimistic that he is capable of providing the quality representation the public deserves and needs in Augusta if we are to achieve all that this wonderful state and her wonderful people are capable of.   Please consider joining me in voting for Seth Berry on November 4th.

To the Editor:

As time draws near to Election Day, I wish to speak in support of Seth Berry for State Representative.  He has ably represented the communities of Bowdoinham, Bowdoin and Richmond for the past two years and has brought enthusiasm, an ethic of hard work and a strong awareness of the issues of importance to this region to the Maine House of Representatives.

I am particularly impressed with his leadership on energy issues while serving on the Utilities and Energy Committee and his efforts to have Maine reduce greenhouse gasses, become energy independent and enjoy more prosperity as a result.

Seth Berry has the talent and commitment to tackle complex policy matters of statewide significance while at the same time paying close attention to extremely important local issues that have immediate bearing on the health and welfare of the residents of this district.  Please join me in voting for Seth Berry on election day!

Sincerely,

Letters to the Editor, 2006:

Issues I care about

To the editor:

It is with a sincere commitment to Seth's capacity for political service,
who is someone who has what it takes be a strong, fair and accessible
representative, that I write this letter of support for Seth Berry's
candidacy as my representative from Bowdoin in the Legislature in
Augusta.

I met Seth recently when he visited me on his swing through Bowdoin one
Saturday afternoon, while he was out making a personal effort to talk to
all of the people he will represent. When I asked him why I should give him
my vote, he had clear, well-thought out answers that he was able to
articulate without hesitation. His answers dealt directly with the issues I
care about most and asked him to respond to: the environment, health care,
education and cutting taxes without resorting to drastic, short-sighted,
short-term, feel-good initiatives like TABOR.

He did not once refer to himself as a "local son," which he is, and could
have resorted to as a vote-getting tactic. No, Seth keeps his eyes on
target and rises to the occasion at hand in terms of what tasks he needs to
undertake as our representative and how he is going to address them. Only
after I asked him directly what his connection to the area is, did he tell
me that his roots are local. If I needed even one more reason to believe in
his candidacy, that would be it, but he had my vote long before that. Many
good, nice, local people run for political office. But, when you think
about it, service is about capacity, not just loyalty to a person or
political party.

Think about voting for a representative who has answers to questions
because he has been thinking about how to address them and is capable of
solving some of the many challenges
Maine faces. I will give Seth my vote
because he has already begun to do just that. I encourage you to vote for
Seth on Nov. 7 as our representative for Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and
Richmond.

Loves the state

To the editor:

Seth Berry is smart, caring and energetic. He loves the state of Maine and
its people. If I could figure out how to jam the ballot boxes of
Richmond,
Bowdoin and Bowdoinham in his favor, I  would. The best I can do is urge
everyone to go to the polls on Nov. 7 and vote for Seth so he can be our
next Democratic representative in the state Legislature. He will make us
all proud!

The best choice

To the editor:

Seth Berry is the best choice for the House District 67 legislative seat.
An exploration of his Web site (sethberry.org) will clarify his position on
tax reduction. He proposes seven solutions to improve
Maine's economic
health, including a look at our dependence on oil and a change to the
Dirigo health care system. Seth has a workable plan. He has experience in
government -- Bowdoinham selectman, chairman of the selectmen, a member

of Citizens to Reduce Property Taxes Statewide -- as well as extensive
experience in education as a teacher. Seth understands that the needs of
education are tied to the success of a community.

I have known Seth since he was born. He is honest, caring, and thoughtful.
He is the best choice for representative from our district. His roots go
back three generations in Bowdoinham and his life experiences are broad. He
will bring a local and a national view to
Maine government.

Listens carefully

To the editor:

Seth Berry is the common-sense candidate we need to represent our families
and businesses in District 67. He is honest, intelligent, energetic and
listens carefully to everyone's concerns. Seth is a third generation Mainer
raising his own family here in Bowdoinham.

Seth Berry is sincere in his convictions and will roll up his sleeves to get the

work done for his fellow citizens.

I was stunned

To the editor:

I've never gotten over being too young to be a part of the Sixties. I
always wanted to be passionate and idealistic about issues and candidates.
Then came Nixon and Watergate and now, we perpetuate that legacy, with
George W. Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney and Foley. I never wanted to become a
cynical person, but I feel it creeping into my discussions with my kids and
it makes me sad. I want my children to have hope for the future and to be
able to believe that "one man, one vote" can still change the world.

I met Seth Berry at an elementary school presentation of an 18th century
town hall meeting that he coordinated to teach the kids the historical and
modern value of the voice of one man and his vote. I was stunned. My sons
were dressed in their colonial costumes, standing and giving their speeches
in the
Bowdoinham Town Hall with Seth as their moderator and you could
truly see they understood how that impacted our country. Their enthusiasm
matched that of their teacher, Seth Berry, and I was hooked.

Seth Berry has inspired me to have hope in a candidate again. Seth has the
best interests of my children in mind and the integrity and enthusiasm to
get the job done. I'm able to put my trust in a candidate again because of
him.

Positive campaign

To the editor:

Residents of Bowdoin, Richmond and Bowdoinham are fortunate to have Seth
Berry running for state representative because he is energetic and
committed to economic prosperity and our natural resources. He has run a
positive campaign and has worked very hard since early summer to reach
every home in the district. As a mother, I am very impressed with Mr.
Berry's dedication to quality education and ensuring that the  next
generation of Mainers are successful.

Seth Berry's fresh ideas will benefit not only our region but the entire state as

well. I will be proud to vote for Seth on Nov. 7.

Karin Tilberg

An asset to Maine

To the editor:

Voters in the Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond area this fall are blessed
to have one of the community's hardest working and impressive citizens
running for the Maine House of Representatives. Seth Berry will be the
voice that
Maine needs in Augusta.

Seth Berry symbolizes the best of Maine. He believes in common sense ideas
that will move our state forward. From a family of
Maine small business
owners, Seth is also a superb local educator.  No one will work harder to
create jobs and opportunity for our kids. We will be blessed to have
someone of Seth's character and experience in the Maine House.

Please support an exceptional candidate on Nov. 7. Few will add more value
to
Maine's future.

Works well with others

To the editor:

When I met Seth Berry, candidate for the House of Representatives District
67, early in his campaign at a community event, I was impressed at the
attentiveness with which he listened to my concerns. I would have liked to
learn more about his views, but understood that his priority at that point
in time was gathering as much input as possible regarding his future
constituents' concerns. Articulating how he would work to address those
concerns could, and should, wait until he had gathered more information.

As time passed and I perused his Web site and conversed with others who knew
him better, I quickly confirmed my first impression: that Seth is a person
for whom I can cast an enthusiastic vote. I believe he has the
intelligence, creativity and compassion to work constructively with other
legislators to craft a secure and hopeful future for all Mainers. If you
live in Bowdoin, Bowdoinham or
Richmond, please visit www.sethberry.org to
find your own reasons to vote for Seth on Nov. 7.

Values education

To the editor:

In our current climate of entrenched partisan politics and uncivil
political discourse, I believe we need legislators who can build consensus
among diverse groups and create a vision for the future for all
constituents. I believe Seth Berry is a candidate who can accomplish these
goals. Seth's fiscal conservatism and ability to make difficult financial
choices are evident from his work as a selectman in Bowdoinham.

In addition, Seth Berry truly values education and Maine's heritage and
character, and he understands that
Maine needs to be positioned to respond
to the challenges that lie ahead. I urge my neighbors in
Richmond, Bowdoin
and Bowdoinham to join with me in voting for Seth Berry.

Alice Elliott

Balanced approach

To the editor:

I am writing to endorse Seth Berry for state representative.  Seth has
experience at the local level as a selectman in Bowdoinham and an
understanding of the challenges that face our state in the coming years. As
a third generation resident of this area, he has strong connection to the
region; but as an individual who has spent time in other areas including
nationally and internationally, he can bring the perspective gained by
looking at Maine from outside of the state. As an educator, he understands
the needs of our local schools and how critical it is that we prepare our
children for the changing work force in
Maine.

I have been impressed with Seth's balanced approach, his thoughtfulness

and his insight into local, state and national issues. I plan on voting for Seth Berry.

Eileen Sylvan Johnson
Bowdoin

Compassionate

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Seth Berry for Legislature. I am a freshman at
Mt. Ararat High School and have known Mr. Berry for at least six years. He
was my advisor in elementary school and has continued to monitor my
progress throughout my middle school years and into my high school years.

He is a thoughtful, supportive, caring person who has always been there for
anyone who has needed help or to show someone their true potential. I
cannot think of a more compassionate person who will be there for the people

of the towns he will represent and for the state of Maine in general.

Although I am not able to vote in this election, I urge you to vote for Mr. Berry.

For the children

To the editor:

I want Seth Berry to be state representative for Bowdoinham, Bowdoin and
Richmond. He's an educator with years of experience in New York's inner
city, at the
Bowdoinham Community School and at Mt. Ararat Middle School.
He has taught kids from elementary through high school, and he's taught
teachers to more effectively reach children with different needs. He knows
education broadly and deeply.

As a teacher who has spent more than 25 years teaching several generations
of
Mt. Ararat students to read and think and express themselves, I've seen
how government at the state and national levels can affect the quality of
what goes on in our classrooms. I want a representative who knows education
and can help Augusta make the best decisions about what our children need.
That man is Seth Berry. Please give him your vote.
