Health Care Reform Is Critical It is common wisdom that our health care system works well -- as long as we are healthy. Unfortunately, the U.S. also has the highest costs, and some of the worst results, of any developed nation. In addition, these costs are an enormous drag on our economy. We must control costs, and focus more on preventive measures that save lives and save money. This is why Seth supports a public health care option that can compete with private plans -- plans that have resulted in record profits for the health care insurers. Private companies, with little or no regulation, must not be the only option for Americans seeking affordable and effective insurance. In 2009, Maine passed a health care bill of rights, and stabilized funding for our own public option plan, which was the first such plan in the nation. As a result, Maine has been one of a handful of states to experience a decline in the number of uninsured. However, Maine can not do it alone. Now it is time for reform at the national level. Seth strongly supports President Obama's health care reform, and encourages all Americans to inform themselves fully and not believe the propaganda and fake "grass-roots" protests or emails being pushed by insurance companies and others who profit from the broken system we have now. Maine, with its two Republican U.S. Senators, may well determine the outcome of this opportunity for reform. |
