Proprioceptive Activities

 

proprioception is kinesthetic or body awareness which provides information to the child from inside the body from the muscles, ligaments, and joints.  These are especially helpful for children who have low muscle tone and who are not able to be sure where their body is in space.  They are in need of heavy work activities, which involve heavy weight for the body to carry.

 

· Any type of heavy work such as carrying books (for a purpose such as to put away), stacking chairs, erasing the board, cleaning chalk erasers.

· Animal walks such as: duck walk, crab walk, dinosaur stomp, kangaroo hop, caterpillar crawl, snake slither Be CREATIVE (c:

· Wheelbarrow walk

· Play jack in the box (have child squat as if in the box, you “crank the box” by turning your hand near the child, then all of a sudden have child jump up as high as (s)he can from the squatting position

· Leap frog

· Hopscotch

· Jump rope

· Trampoline

· Wall pushups (pushing on wall to pretend to move it, can be done with hands or feet)

· Rolling: somersaults, log rolling

· Playing catch with heavier items such as a weighted ball or heavier bean bag animal
