What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy in the educational setting is about helping a student participate in school and school
related activities to the best of their ability, fulfilling their life role as a student. Being a student is a child's
"occupation" or life activity. Occupational Therapy seeks to support the student in academic areas and extracurricular
areas through a focus on social skills, organization, handwriting, self-help skills, prevocational and vocational activities,
and underlying skills that contribute to these areas of academics.
Occupational Therapists Use Their Skill to Support a Student By....
· observing them in multiple settings and giving recommendations to help support full participation (i.e. seating,
time increase, assistive tools etc)
· help identify necessary accommodations for greater success
· direct service to work on identified areas of difficulty using a variety of activities that are fun and motivating
· educate school staff and parents regarding activities and procedures that will help the students improve their
skills
· work with an entire classroom to improve their skills as a group in a variety of areas
How is Occupational Therapy Provided
Occupational Therapy services for individual students are identified through the IEP process. Once a student
has been referred for occupational therapy an evaluation is completed and eligibility is determined at another meeting.
Once eligibility is determined goals are written and service is provided in one of the following ways:
· directly out of the classroom (1:1)
· directly in the classroom (1:1)
· small group out the classroom (2:1)
· small group in the classroom (2:1)
· within the classroom as a whole group
Occupational
Therapy is provided within the school on average 2 times per week at 30 minutes each session. Success can be improved
when similar activities are carried out at home. Sometimes a student may have difficulty with certain skill areas but not
qualify for occupational therapy. Click Here for activity ideas to help your student/child in specific skill areas.
