2007 TRIP SCHEDULE

Note trip lists will be linked to trips as they are made available.  All trips leave on time!  Please contact the leader(s) ahead of time to let them know you are coming.  All trips will carpool from meeting place.

March 10 (Saturday). Western Maine/Route16. Winter boreal species - Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Crossbills, Pine Grosbeaks, and much more.  Leader: Lionel Quirion. Meeting place: City Hall parking lot, Augusta. Departure time: 5:30 a.m.  trip list

March 17 (Saturday). Wild Goose Chase to Rhode Island. "Twitcher's" trip to Rhode Island to find the Barnacle and Pink-footed Geese that have been wintering there this year, probably also White-footed and Cackling Geese will be seen.  Portsmouth and Kingston RI. Leader: Mike Smith.  Meeting place: Gardiner Hannaford. Departure time: 5 a.m.  UPDATE MARCH 16: CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

April 21 (Saturday). Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch. Broadwings galore!  Even a Swainson's Hawk up here in 2005.  Leader: Lionel Quirion. Meeting Place: Citgo Station on Route 197 off the I-95 Richmond exit. Departure time: 8:30 a.m. Contact: Jay Adams (Lionel will be on the mountain). Note: Lionel will be on Bradbury Mountain daily March 20 - May 20. Join him any time and particularly any day with a southwest wind.

May 5 (Saturday). Damariscotta River Association, Belvedere Road, Damariscotta. Leader: Jay Adams. Meeting Place: DRA Heritage Farm, Belvedere Rd, Damariscotta. Departure time: 7:00 a.m.  trip list

May 7 -11 (Monday - Friday). Augusta and Waterville area spring migration sites.  Early migration and the start of spring warblers.  No need for pre-contact, just show up.
May 8 - Pine Tree State Arboretum, Augusta - meet in DEP visitor lot (across from AMHI), 7 AM.  Leader: Mike Smith
May 10 - Augusta airport - meet at the back of the cemetary adjacent to the airport, 7 AM.  Leader:  Mike Smith

May 12 (Saturday).  Evergreen Cemetery and Capisic Park, Portland.  Meet at Gardiner Hannaford at 5:30AM, we'll be back by noon.  Leader: Jay Adams.

May 14 - 18 (Monday - Friday). Augusta, Waterville, and Portland area spring migration sites. This week and next are the peak passage of songbirds in migration - all kinds of stuff including warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, and lots more!  No need for pre-contact, just show up.
May 14 -
Pine Tree State Arboretum, Augusta - meet in DEP visitor lot (across from AMHI), 7 AM.  Leader: Jay Adams
May 15 - Augusta airport - meet at the back of the cemetery adjacent to the airport, 7 AM.  Leader:  Mike Smith
May 15 - Colby Arboretum, Waterville - meet in the first big parking lot you come to on the right as you come up Mayflower Hill Drive from Waterville (not from the North Street entrance). Meet at the southeast corner of the lot, closest to the southern entrance of the lot. 7 AM.  Leader: Al Haury
May 16 - CANCELLED due to schedule conflicts.
May 17 - Pine Tree State Arboretum, Augusta - meet in DEP visitor lot (across from AMHI), 7 AM.  Leader: Mike Smith
May 17 - Sidney Bog, Waterville, 7 AM.  Leader: Herb Wilson
May 18 - Augusta airport - meet at the back of the cemetery adjacent to the airport, 7 AM.  Leader:  Jay Adams

May 19 (Saturday). RAINED OUT  Matinicus Island one-day wonder. Leader: Mike Smith.  We will fly over to Matinicus in the morning and bird the island for spring migrants all day. There are very few resources on Matinicus so be prepared to bring a day's worth of food and walk a lot. Bird-wise, this should be like birding Monhegan, but with a bit more of a sense of adventure. Airfare is $80 round trip. Interested individuals contact Mike BEFORE MAY 12 to plan exact details such as time and meeting place.  Maximum of 8 participants.  2006 trip list

May 21-25.

May 26 (Saturday).
Monhegan Island.
It's the legendary Mohnegan Island, where anything and everything can show up!  One day tour from Port Clyde returning to Port Clyde around 5PM.  Spring can produce trees dripping with migrants or sitting on the beach too weak from migrating to fly.  Leader: Jay Adams. Note: This trip will require advance registration as space on the Port Clyde ferry will have to be confirmed.  Contact Jay if you want to sign up.  trip list

May 28 (Monday - Memorial Day). Colby College Campus. Get the last of the migrants passing through are area including Blackpoll Warbler and possibly Mourning Warbler.  Leader: Al Haury. Meeting Place: Colby Arboretum, Waterville - meet in the first big parking lot you come to on the right as you come up Mayflower Hill Drive from Waterville (not from the North Street entrance). Meet at the southeast corner of the lot, closest to the southern entrance of the lot. 7 AM.  Leader: Al Haury.

June 3 (Sunday). Rangeley/Oquossoc/Route 16. We'll look for boreal breeding species such as Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Blackburnian Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Black-backed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. Leader: Lionel Quirion. Meeting Place:  City Hall parking lot, Augusta. Departure time: 5:30 a.m.

June 9 (Saturday). Swan Island. Breeding birds of this lovely island.  Leader: Gabriella Howard. Meeting Place: Richmond boat ramp, Kennebec River. Departure time: 7:00 AM.  Please sign up early with Gabriella.

June 16 (Saturday). Kennebunk Plains. Upland Sandpiper, Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrow, Black Racer, what a great place!  Leader: Jay Adams. 
Meeting Place:  City Hall parking lot, Augusta. Departure time: 5:30 a.m.

June 23 (Saturday). The Burn Road near Topsfield. Come way Down East with us to search for boreal species such as
Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Blackburnian Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Black-backed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher.  This spot is well known for Crossbills too. Leader: Lionel Quirion.  Meeting Place:  City Hall parking lot, Augusta. Departure time: 5:30 a.m.

July 28 (Saturday). Hill's Beach, Biddeford. Shorebirds galore!  Godwits, peeps, and more!  Leader: Jay Adams. Meeting Place: Citgo Station on Route 197 off the I-95 Richmond exit. Departure time: TBA (tide-dependent).  High tide is 11AM.

August 19 (Sunday). NOTE DATE CHANGEWeskeag Marsh, Thomaston  Shorebirds galore!  Tringids, peeps, both Sharp-tailed Sparrows, and numerous raptors.  Leader: Mike Smith.  Meeting Place:
Hannaford parking lot, Gardiner. Departure time: 1:30PM.

September 15 (Saturday). Cousin's Island. Fall passage of warblers, vireos, flycatchers, and more!  This can be a great spot for southbound birds.  Leader: Al Haury. Meeting Place: Citgo Station on Route 197 off the I-95 Richmond exit. Departure time: 6:00 a.m.

September 23 (Sunday). Monhegan Island. It's the legendary Mohnegan Island, where anything and everything can show up!  One day tour from Port Clyde returning to Port Clyde around 5PM.  Fall is typically when the oddities occur such as Clay-colored Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Western Kingbird, and who knows what else.  Last year's fall trip got us the Virginia's Warbler! October 13 (Saturday). Augusta airport. 
Look for late fall migrants.  Meet at the back of the cemetary adjacent to the airport, 7 AM.  Leader: Lionel Quirion

November 3 (Saturday). Sabattus Pond. Major duckage!  Thousands of Scaup and Ring-necked Ducks, even Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks on this lake, as we see the peak passage of waterfowl through our area. Leader: Jay Adams. Meeting Place: City Hall parking lot, Augusta. Departure time: 7:30 a.m.
