M82 is a starburst galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major .A starburst galaxy is a galaxy experiencing a period of intense star forming activity. Although this activity may last for ten million years or more, that is like a month in the life of a ten billion year old galaxy. During a starburst, stars can form at tens, even hundreds of times greater rates than the star formation rate in normal galaxies. Many of these newly formed stars are very massive and very bright, so starburst galaxies are among the most luminous galaxies. This galaxy is easily visible in small scopes as a cigar shaped spindle of light very near M81 a large spiral . This image is an 21x2 min .exposure taken with an 11" scope and MX7c ccd camera .Image acquisition was done in AA 3.0 using Star 2000 to auto guide . The processing was also done in AA 3.0 using the Mx color synthesis routine to create the LRGB.
