Developing for TCY

This program is in beta testing, and should be sued at your own risk.  While it should not cause any system problems, data corruption, or crashes, that data it displays is questionable at best.

If you are going to download this program, I ask that you notify me of any problems you witness.  Before e-mailing, please look in your installation directory and look at the file parsing.txt.  This file contains a replay of all of the actions that the program took while processing the game log.  The first line of parsing.txt contains the name of the game log that was opened.  Please attach the game log and the parsing.txt to any error reports and include a description of what the problem is and roughly when it occurred (10 minutes left in the third quarter).  Parsing.txt is overwritten each time a game log is replayed, so it will not eat up space on your hard drive.

Known Issues

  • Penalties on kickoffs are not currently being processed.  This was an oversight that I just noticed, but decided to release the app and see what other errors there may be,
  • Penalty yardage is most likely not correct.  Penalties like holding which are 10 yards from the spot of the foul have me confused, basically because I don't know how the stats are actually recorded - if a holding occurs 1 yard up field you'll have first and 19, but is that 10 penalty yards or only 9?  I have the same question when its in the backfield?  You'll have first and 22, but is that still 10 penalty yards or is it now 12?
  • Time of possession will not match up.  The issue here is with returns (Kicks, punts, blocked kicks, fumbles, and interceptions).  Technically the time of possession for those plays is split between the two teams at the instant the change of possession occurs.  I have no way of determining this, so my reported values WILL be off.
  • Opening files is somewhat kludgey.  File...Open is pretty nice:

The list initially contains all game logs that have been saved (in any save game - this may have to change).  You can use the lower section to filter based on teams involved (which will apply to either the home or the visiting team), and/or date the simulation was performed.  Clicking on Other will open up a standard File...Open dialog allowing you (ok...me when I'm debugging) to open up any flg file on your system.

    Note:
This dialog has changed, but I did not feel like doing a new screenshot.  You can now also select a Saved Game  name to filter by (it would have been to cumbersome otherwise).  The list is also now sorted in reverse order (so the most recently qualifying game log is at the top of the list.

The kludginess comes after you click on OK. you are presented with this dialog:

Note: This dialog has changed in 0.2b.  Instead of edit fields for the short names, you now select from a list of the short names that are actually used in the file.

This is kludgey on two levels.  First things will be REALLY wrong if you do not enter in the correct Short Names for each team.  There is no issues with not selecting the logo files (you'll just get the Solecismic logo where their logo would normally be).  Second, if you enter the Short name, then click the... (browse) buttons, you'll lose your entry for the short name.  Annoying, but not app killing, just set the logos first.  The good news is that all of this information is saved, so you'll only have to deal with it once for each team.
  • Some players names will not be displayed correctly.  My parsing was all based off of spaces, so any names in LNAMES.DLL or SNAMES.DLL will not be displayed correctly.  Instead of Doug Mac Leod , it will be displayed as Doug Mac.  All processing should be correct except for the name.  One thing that has just occurred to me is that I have no idea how Jrs will be handled, depending on what punctuation is in there, it coudl cause real problems.

Well enough of what is bad with the application...

Here's the main toolbar and what the buttons do:

The unlabeled buttons don't do anything yet.  Note that the buttons will enable and disable based on when you can use them (you can only pause, increase or decrease speed during auto play and can only step forward one play when the auto-replay is paused).

Full player stats are available in the View menu, where you select the team and the category of stats to display (too simple for a screenshot).

The file can be downloaded here.
