Indian Basket is one of my
favorite mosaic patterns. After looking at the patterns of woven materials
and colored beads, I made this large platter. The first Gold Indian Basket
is now in a collection in Chicago. It was strong in yellows, golds, and reds.
The piece was made in a manner similar to traditional mosaic work -- small
colored fragments of glass laid on the base to create the colored pattern
with yellows, reds, and black. The center of the platter is a dimpled
iridescent glass that further conveys the similarity to a woven basket. A version I call Purple Indian
Basket incorporates more purple and blue dichroic chips (over 700 in all!) to
create a similar design. The piece still uses the dimpled iridescent center
which changes in color as the plate is tilted in the light. In some ways this
piece is more formal and elegant than the first -- the regal colors make this
so. 20 inch Both
