BOYS BASKETBALL: Mt. Blue fades
late in loss
Bangor 42 Mt. Blue 29 Freshman beat Bangor, JV's comeback fall short
BY TRAVIS LAZARCZYK, Staff
Writer 02/03/2010 Waterville Sentenille
FARMINGTON — The Bangor High School boys basketball team isn’t going to come out and run you off
the court. Instead, the Rams will wear you down gradually, so by the fourth quarter, all that’s left of you is a nub. Ahead by four points at halftime, Mt. Blue succumbed to the Rams in the second half, and Bangor won a 42-29
Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A game Tuesday. The win was the 13th consecutive
for the Rams (15-2). Mt. Blue dropped to 10-7. Bangor took control of the game with a 12-0
run in the fourth quarter. Maxx Alexander’s layup with 1 minute, 14 seconds left gave the Rams a 40-25 lead, their largest
margin of the game. “That started in the third quarter, and they came out (in the
second half) and played harder than us,” Mt. Blue coach Jim Bessey said. “We didn’t match their intensity
level.” Trailing 18-14 at the half, Bangor scored the first five points of the third
quarter to take the lead. The teams traded baskets until Clark Noonan’s layup put Bangor ahead for good with just over
a minute left in the third quarter. “Coach (Roger Reed) gave us some words in the
locker room,” said Noonan, who led the Rams with 12 points and 11 rebounds. “We had to make smart decisions.” Mt. Blue’s sophomore forward Cam Sennick had a big first half, scoring 11 of the Cougars’ 18 points.
The Rams tightened up defensively in the second half, holding Sennick to just two points. “Coach
had Tristan Thomas on (Sennick), and we have faith in Tristan. He shut (Sennick) down in the second half,” Noonan said. Added Bessey: “We have to improve offensively. It’s not shooting. We just have to get in position
to shoot. I thought we played good defense the whole game. Our offensive game, we can’t get into a rhythm or flow.” Luke Hetterman had seven points and four steals for Bangor, while Zach Blodgett added eight points. Blake
Hart scored seven points off the bench for the Cougars.

Brewer 68 Mt. Blue 65 (OT) Mt. Blue JV's lose & Mt.
Blue Freshman win
BOYS BASKETBALL
BY ERNIE CLARK OF THE NEWS STAFF FARMINGTON — The long and winding road to this Franklin County shire town is paved with danger
for many basketball teams each winter. So when the Brewer Witches had some bus difficulties en route to Mt. Blue High
School for Tuesday night’s battle of Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference contenders, it could have been just the first
chapter in a troubling road trip experienced by many teams before them. And when Mt. Blue’s Jordan Hoyt buried
a game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime, another chapter of traveling travails
seemingly was set for production. But Dom Drake and the Witches did some editing of their own in the extra period, as
Drake scored six of his game-high 22 points in overtime to help Brewer outlast the Cougars 68-65. “You can’t
beat this,” said Brewer coach Ben Goodwin, whose Witches are 12-2. “We’ve been in some great basketball
games. We lost a tough one the other day [to Edward Little of Auburn] on a 3-point shot, so it’s nice to get into overtime
and win this one — especially on the road after a long trip like this against a very good team. “It puts
us in a great position getting ready for the tournament.” Eric Berry’s layup off the overtime tip gave Mt.
Blue its first lead since 2-0, but Drake answered 12 seconds later with a driving layup and Ray Bessette soon followed with
a similar drive with 2:52 left in overtime to give Brewer the lead for good. “All the stats say the team that scores
first in overtime has the best chance of winning,” said Mt. Blue coach Jim Bessey. “But we needed to get a stop
on the next possession, and then on the possession that followed that we shot quick.” Tyler Bessette’s two
free throws gave Brewer a 63-59 lead with 1:44 left in overtime, and the Cougars got no closer than two the rest of the way
— in part because of five turnovers during the extra period. “We just had to work as a team,” said
Drake, who also contributed 11 rebounds and six assists. Ray Bessette finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and six
assists for the Witches, while Jordan Richards added 10 points, all in the second half. Nate Carson chipped in with eight
points and five rebounds, while Tyler Bessette also scored eight points. Sophomore center Cam Sennick led Mt. Blue with
17 points, while Hoyt scored 16 and Ryan Backus added 12. Brewer led 25-21 after a sloppy first half in which the teams
combined to commit 24 turnovers, then used a quick start after intermission to seemingly take control. Richards hit a
3-pointer from each corner and Ray Bessette also scored from long range during a 13-3 run that gave the Witches a 38-26 lead
with 3:27 left in the third quarter. “We just needed to be patient when we executed against their zone,”
said Drake. “When we rushed it, we had turnovers, but when we were patient we were able to find those gaps.” That run forced Mt. Blue to pick up its own pace, and the Cougars were able to rally in part by crashing the offensive boards,
but mostly with the long ball. Backus hit a 27-foot 3-pointer from the right of the key at the third-quarter buzzer to
draw Mt. Blue within 43-39. Brewer then stretched its lead back to double digits (49-39) on back-to-back 3-pointers by
brothers Tyler and Ray Bessette to open the fourth quarter. But Brewer managed just six points over the next five minutes,
and back-to-back 3-pointers by Backus and Blake Hart narrowed the Witches’ lead to 55-54 with 52.6 seconds left. Drake fed Carson for a layup after a Brewer timeout to restore the Witches to a three-point edge with 37 seconds to play,
but Mt. Blue got the last shot of regulation after a missed Brewer free throw. Backus grabbed the rebound, drove down
the court and fed Hoyt for the game-tying shot from the left wing.

Mt. Blue 58 Hampden 48
Sennick leads Mt. Blue boys past Hampden DeRaps,
Bronco girls top Cougars
HAMPDEN, Maine — Closing
out games has been the Achilles’ heel of the Mt. Blue boys basketball team this winter. The
Cougars from Farmington were faced with that situation Monday afternoon against Hampden Academy, as the Broncos battled back
from an 11-point first-half deficit to tie things up in the fourth quarter. But coach Jim
Bessey’s club responded with defense and clutch foul shooting, closing the game on a 16-6 run to earn a pivotal 58-48
victory in the second game of a Class A doubleheader. The Hampden girls beat Mt. Blue 68-43
in the opening contest. In the boys game, Mt. Blue appeared to be in control in the first
half, holding the Broncos to 7-for-24 shooting from the field while taking a 30-22 lead into halftime. After trailing 42-32 to open the fourth, Hampden started that period on a 10-0 run, capped by Brad Dolan’s
reverse layup with five minutes to play. That prompted Bessey to call timeout, settle his team down and remember the basics. “Stay smart, complete our passes, don’t do anything foolish, limit the turnovers,” was Bessey’s
message, said Cougars’ senior guard Jordan Hoyt. Out of the timeout, Cam Sennick
sank both ends of a 1-and-1 to give Mt. Blue the lead back, while a baseline pull-up and driving layup along the baseline
from Hoyt stretched it back to six with 2:07 to go. Hampden’s Graham Safford then
sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key to bring his team back within three, but the free-throw line ultimately won this
game for the Cougars, as they went 11-for-14 from the stripe in the fourth quarter while Hoyt was 5-for-7, scoring nine of
his 12 points in the period. Sennick, a sophomore center, paced a balanced Mt. Blue effort
with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Jake Malone, who drew Safford defensively, scored all five of his points in the fourth. “I thought the Malone boy did a great job guarding him throughout most of the night,” said Bessey,
whose club entered play 10th in Class A while Hampden was third. Both teams are now 9-4. The
Cougars switched periodically from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone on defense, which frustrated the Broncos’ shooters. Safford
was 3-for-9 and Jacob Moore only 3-for-17. Even though they were at a disadvantage in the
paint, the Cougars went right to the heart of the Broncos’ interior defense and were rewarded with 27 free-throw attempts. “They’re obviously bigger, stronger, more physical than us, but I just thought we came to play
and put on a good effort, and we just kind of held on at the end,” Bessey said. Brad
Dolan led Hampden with 15 points while Safford had 11.

Matt Verrier hit a 3 pointer with 8.7 second left
to give the Vikings a 48-47 victory over the Mt. Blue Cougars in South Paris tonight. This was the Cougars worst game of the
season, but nearly turned into their best win. Trailing 29-12 early in the 3rd and only having made 2 field goals in the first
half the Cougars mounted a furious comeback. The big killer tonight though wasn't neccessarily the poor shooting, but
the poor fouls hooting as Mt. Blue missed 20 free throws (22-42) including crucial ones in the final seconds. Oxford Hills
on the other hand hit their foul shots (19 for 23). Matt Verrier had a team high 15 points including the game winning shot.
Senior Cody Hadley chipped in 15 as well. The Cougars were led by Senior Ryan Backus with 12 and 10 rebounds. Sophmore Eric
Berry added 10 points to lead the Cougars. Mt. Blue drops to 8-4 and must quickly get over this loss as they travel to Hampden
Monday Afternoon to take on the Broncos. Oxford Hills improves to 6-6 and will host Cony Tuesday night.
