HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Hampden picked to win KVAC A BY
TRAVIS LAZARCZYK Staff Writer Waterville Sentinelle http://morningsentinel.mainetoday.com/sports/stories/7105655.html Skowhegan boys basketball coach Troy Scott knows why his team was ranked fifth in the Kennebec Valley
Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. His Indians return a number of varsity players from last season. Cony coach Tim
Bonsant was a little surprised to see his team ranked seventh.
"That might
be a little high," Bonsant said. "I didn't think we'd crack the top eight, to be honest."
Hampden Academy, the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Maine tournament last season, is the preseason
favorite, followed by Bangor, which has five regional titles this decade.
"I
think Bangor and Hampden are a little better than everyone else. That's my opinion," Scott said.
Added Bonsant: "Hampden was very good before (Graham) Safford transferred there, and he's
one of the best point guards in the state."
Last season's regional
champion, Edward Little, was third, followed by Brewer, Skowhegan, Brunswick, Cony and Oxford Hills.
Practices begin today, with games set to start on Dec. 5.
Skowhegan
should be bolstered by the return of senior forward Paul Verville, who missed all of last season with a neck injury, but the
Indians will be playing with another injured starter, forward Jordan Taylor. A starter since his freshman season, Taylor tore
his ACL playing football but will play basketball this season.
"Jordan's
playing with an injury all season," Scott said. "He's going to brace it up."
While Bonsant's Rams return a number of players, including Ryan Minoty and Walker Cooper, each of whom was named
to the conference's preseason "players to watch" list, Cony has some holes to fill.
"I lost my point guard (Greg O'Neill) and top scorer (Brian Carville)," Bonsant said.
Nokomis and Leavitt left the conference for Class B, while Erskine Academy moved up to
Class A. Only eight of the 15 teams will make the playoffs, which should make for a competitive league.
"I see three or four (playoff) locks, and the other teams are all fighting for those last four
spots," Bonsant said.
Added Scott: "It makes every game a little
more important."
