Kurt B Mohr (1962-1985)
Kurt was my best friend during my high school years 1977-1980. We met in art class at J.I.
Case H.S. in Racine, WI. I was making a skateboard deck out of a piece of cherry hardwood and Kurt and I struck up a friendship
due to our mutual interest in skateboarding. At that time I had a small quarter pipe inside my garage that I would hit from
outside. I invited Kurt over after school one day and from then on we skated often together.
Kurt
was very wise for his age and this always impressed me. He seemed to possess a knowledge about life that I did not attain
until much later. He always knew of great new music and would tell me of groups like Rush, that are still my favorites to
this day.
After a brief stint in college that did not work out, I joined the Navy and Kurt and our mutual
friend Mike went into the Marines together. I lost track of Kurt until one day in 1983 we corresponded and to my surprise
he and Mike were stationed nearby at 29 Palms. I was in San Diego, so Kurt took the bus down and we hung out for a few days.
That was the last time I saw Kurt.
I got out of the Navy in late 1986, I wrote to Kurt's parents and asked about
Kurt and where he was. The letter I got back knocked the wind out of me and brought me to my knees, literally. The letter
stated that Kurt had passed away while in the Marines in 1985. It wasn't until many years later when I found Mike
somehow online that Kurt had died from Hodgekin's disease.
Kurt was the kind of friend that you
would give your life for. I miss him dearly.
Mike Grzyb
Mike is a great friend who is always having fun. You could count on Mike to keep things light and
in perspective, seeing the humor in any situation. A very close friend to Kurt and I indeed. Currently still skating and being
"rad". Mike has what I call a true skater spirit.
Paul Hugasian
Paul arrived in Racine about midway into my skating days around 78-79. He was from California
and I was of course jealous and guarded. But Paul was a few years older and very nice and quite an accomplished skater. I
did not at first like his style, but his ability to pull off tricks and be rad was undeniable. I heard from Mike that he was
awarded "best skater in WI". Paul if you're out there, drop me a line!
