19. Congratulations T.E.S.T for a great effort at Leagues
The final results are in and T.E.S.T placed SECOND at Leagues this year, only 6 points behind BTC.
It all came down to the final relay where a technical error on the coaches part was made, having entered one swimmer in too many events, this relay was disqualified. Errors like this are plentiful at meets like Leagues, and unfortunately, our mistake was not caught in time. The coaches are deeply sorry. Because this mistake was made and made a change to the team scores the way they did, the League officials are changing the way entries are made for next year and years to come, so that things like this are caught ahead of time.
So onward and upward to States we go! Go TEST!
- Lauren & Annie
Note from Beth that speaks for many of us. You and your team of coaches did a fantastic job this season regardless of how we placed at leagues. The fact that the meet was so close was a testament to not only the effort and ability of our swimmers but the ability of the coaches to put their "best game" together with the number of entries available - a true science!!!!!! It is after all summer swimming and I believe all the kids had a GREAT summer!
Thanks so much for all the effort and hard work to you and your assistants this summer!!

18. 2009 League Championship: Volunteer Assignments
TEST FAMILIES Here are your assignments. Thanks so much to everyone who volunteered and made it on the list and those of you who volunteered after the list was done - thanks anyway and I'll catch you for States!
Rob, Beth Wilbur, Beth Warren, Jess Workman, and Mary Diesing - I have you each scheduled for a specific spot for the transition team list based on your child(rens) swim schedule - however, if you are around the pool and wouldn't mind, I think it would be a good idea to shadow wherever you can when you can - at least that's what I'm planning on doing.

Hello again TEST families!
Tomorrow begins the first day of CVSL Championships 2009! I hope that everyone is getting excited for a fun, fast, exciting meet! I certainly am. I have some important last minute meet and warm up information to deliver:

SATURDAY AM WARM UP: 7AM, please plan to arrive at the team tent at 6:50AM (yes, that early!), so we can walk over to the pool together. Kids will get their heat and lane assignments AFTER warm up. (Meet starts at 8AM)
SATURDAY PM WARM UP: 12:40PM, please plan to arrive at the team tent at 12PM to allow the 11 and older swimmers ample time to stretch, get their heat and lane assignments, and head over to the pool together. The meet starts promptly as soon as we exit the pool from warm up at 1PM, so be prepared. There is NO PARKING at the Winooski Pool for parents and spectators There is also NO AUTOMOBILE traffic on Pine Street on either day, so swimmer drop off is NOT AN OPTION. Parking on site at Landry Park (across the street from the pool) is limited to the following persons; handicapped individuals, meet officials, coaches, lifeguards, meet directors and staff, host board and staff, and CVSL board members. Parking will be available to all others at the large field adjacent to Landry Park with the entrance being on North Street. Shuttle service will be provided from St. Francis Xavier School (St. Peter Street) parking lot if needed. There will be people on North Street to direct you to the right spot.
T-Shirts and Sweat pants will be in tomorrow. Please bring a check or cash tomorrow if you haven't already to be sure to receive your order. So far I only have 10 t-shirt requests, and will be unable to place a second order unless I receive at least 14 more by tonight so I can place the order tomorrow in time for States.
Thanks! Go TEST!

More information from Lauren in message 15 below!
15. 2009 League Information from Lauren
Greetings!
**A parent information sheet is posted on the bulletin board at Sand Hill Pool (and here in message 16, above) with directions/parking information/tent information.
1. Leagues is Friday July 24th and Saturday July 25th at the Winooksi Town Pool.
2. Meet entries were due Saturday the 19th, and are finalized on Monday evening the 21st. NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE TO THE MEET ENTRIES AFTER THEY ARE ENTERED.
3. Friday afternoon session starts with warm up at 3pm, the meet starts at 4pm. You only have to come to Friday's session if you are swimming in an event that night. (100 butterfly, 100 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back).
4. Saturday morning is 10 and under. Warm ups start at 7 am. I will have a better idea on Wednesday what time TEST's allotted warm up session is (7am, 7:15am, 7:30am). The meet starts at 8am. The order is medley relay, 50 free, 25 butterfly, 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, 25 freestyle, free relay.
5. Saturday afternoon is 11 and older. The order of the events is the same, except that it is 100 free, and 50's of stroke. Warm ups start at 12pm at the earliest, and it is great if the swimmers begin to arrive around 11:30 so as to help cheer on the 10 and under's as they finish their swims in the morning. The meet will begin 1 hour after the start of warm ups. We should be done on Saturday around 5 or 6PM.
6. The team will have large tents set up at the Winooski pool for swimmers and parents to congregate. Because the sessions are generally longer than a regular meet, it's a good idea to bring blankets to lie on, extra towels, chairs, and lots of food and drink to re-fuel and re-hydrate our bodies. Some swimmers choose to bring card games, mp3 players, etc. Warm clothes are suggested, and hopefully sunscreen will be needed too. Our tent (because we are the largest team), along with BCC and Vergennes will be situated across the road from the pool. The road (Pine Street) will be closed off for the duration of the meet and will be safe to walk across
7. There is NO PARKING AT THE POOL FOR SWIMMERS.
8. There will be NO BULLPEN on Friday or Saturday afternoon. On Friday afternoon, the other coaches and I will help the kids to get to behind the blocks for their races. On Saturday morning, some coaches will be helping to organize kids and get them from the tent to the bullpen for their races. Parent help is HUGE during the morning session to stay aware of how quickly the meet is moving along to get the kids ready. There are no meet cards at leagues. Heat Sheets with swimmers name, heat, and lane will be provided to coaches and posted at the pool. The afternoon swimmers are more responsible for themselves in that they will get their heat and lane assignments from coaches, but then be required to get themselves to the starting end of the pool for their races at the appropriate time. (READ: PARENTS: PLEASE HELP YOUR SWIMMERS PAY ATTENTION IN THE AFTERNOON!!!)
9. By Wednesday, TEST will be given parent volunteer assignments. We may be assigned just timing, or our responsibilities as a team may include lane shepards, bullpen, cleanup crew, ribbons/awards, results etc. Brenda Green will make assignments for our team based on which parents will be at Leagues and at what session. We (and the Winooski swim team) really appreciate all the volunteer help, as Leagues cannot happen without all the help!
To TEST families from Brenda - I have the assignments for leagues - we need timers, lane shepards, officials, awards table and we also need two transition team members for each time fri night, sat am and sat pm. We have Beth Warren and Mary Diesing as volunteers so far for transition for 2010 leagues, but we need a few more. Would everyone willing to help out for any task please e-mail Brenda asap.
10. ENTRIES ARE POSTED AT THE POOL. Individual entries are final, but relays are TENTATIVE until approximately 30 minutes before the race, and can be changed.
11. There are no meets this Tuesday or Thursday, as Middlebury has a make up meet against BTC tonight.
12. Please be sure to bring checks for sweat pants and T-shirts to practice this week. ($28 to TEST for sweat pants with name, $11.25 to Lauren for t-shirts.)
a. I just talked to EAST COAST PRINTERS, they are willing to run a second order of t shirts ONLY if the order is large enough (24+) I would need to know names/sizes by Friday morning so that we would get the order in time for States. I will only be placing an order if I get a large enough order.
b. For reference, for those who have yet to pay in cash or check for either t-shirts or sweat pants, please give the money to either me or Deb Alden and make ALL CHECKS payable to TEST. For those of you who have already given checks to me, in my name, I will be cashing those checks and writing a check to TEST. Have no fear! All apparel should be due by Thursday/Friday (at the latest).
Please do not hesitate to email me with questions.
Lauren
14. 2010 Leagues at T.E.S.T
Greetings TEST families
Carolyn Hancock gave me a heads up last night that next year, 2010 T.E.S.T will be hosting leagues at our own pool. Although this is very exciting and a great opportunity for some real fund raising (maybe touch pads next?) - it's also a lot of work. Carolyn suggested that we try to get 3 or 4 parents who may be interested in helping out to shadow Winooski this year (they are our hosts) - if anyone is interested, please send Brenda an e-mail and I will get more info.
I want to thank all parents this year for food booth contributions, volunteering and just being willing to help out in anyway you can - I know it can be overwhelming for new families - but thanks to your enthusiasm and help from our wonderful veteran parents all went really well.
Hopefully we'll see a lot of you at this year's Leagues (at Winooski) and States (at UVAC).
Take care,
Brenda
13. Thursday's meet with The Knights is COTS night. Snack bar volunteers needed!
Just as a reminder, the home meet on Thursday vs. The Knights is going to be as large as BCC. It may be long, but hopefully warmer than the past few weeks. It is also the night of the COTS Drive. All CVSL teams will be collecting items to be donated to COTS that night. We ask that 8 & unders bring toothbrushes, 9-10's bring toothpaste, 11-12's bring shampoo and/or conditioner, 13-14's bring soap, and 15-19's bring deoderant. Other items that COTS really appreciate are razors, shaving cream, diapers, body wash, and body lotion. Thanks again for all your support!
Lauren
---
For this Thursday's meet I have two snack bar volunteers (Hagerty and A. Thomas) - I was hoping to get two more volunteers as it will probably be a busy night. If anyone that is not already listed for a job is interested, please e-mail Brenda G.
Thursday's home meet will be a big one with Knights and we will need lots of contributions for the snack bar. Please, if you haven't brought a dish yet, or even if you have and would like to again, we'd love contributions, especially hot dishes as we do expect a big crowd and this is a great way for the team to raise funds.
Brenda
12. Update
To TEST families:
It looks as though we will be re-swimming the Middlebury meet on July 21st. I will keep you updated on that.
As for the Winooski meet on July 2nd, even if it is not stormy, it will be very, very chilly for the swimmers (temperatures below 70), so please pack towels and warm clothes accordingly. All of the coaches were very impressed with what we've seen from the swimmers at practice this week already. Very exciting!
Also, please note that although dual meet entries are usually posted on the morning of the meet, they are not "final" by any means. Oftentimes, swimmers "pull out" that morning, or sometimes, do not show for a meet. It is quite easy for us to add swimmers into the dual meet (as late as during the meet sometimes!) after entries are posted if we (aka I) have forgotten to enter someone. This also means that relays have to be switched or cancelled when swimmers do not show, get sick etc. We do everything in our power to prevent this, but sometimes, it is unavoidable.
Thanks,
Lauren
11. Volunteer job list posted!
Greetings TEST families - Click to see the final volunteer schedule for the 2009 swim season. A big thank-you to all families who volunteered this year - it's great to see so many new families coming forward and I appreciate all the veterans willing to help out training these new volunteers:) Just a friendly reminder, if your name is on a date you cannot make, please find a replacement for your job. I am not able to find replacements once I have posted the list.
To those families who are not on the list to volunteer, we are asking, if you are able, to bring a one-time non-perishable item donation to the snack bar to help off-set snack bar expenses for the season as the snack bar is our only means of fundraising. Items needed include:
- cases of water
- cases of juices
- packages of paper plates
- package of paper bowls
- packages of paper cups for hot items
- packages of paper cups for cold items
- a large box of plastic spoons (can get at Costco)
- a large box of plastic knives (can get at Costco)
- 2 large boxes of plastic forks (can get at Costco)
- bottles of ketchup
- bottles of mustard
Also for new families who are not familiar with how the snack bar runs, prior to each meet one of the snack bar coordinators will post a sign-up list for perishable items for each home meet (i.e. hot dishes, salads, sandwiches, fruit, snack items, etc.) The home meet you are asked to sign-up for depends upon your last name and each family will end up only contributing for two home meets. (unless you'd like to donate to all four home meets)
The perishable item donation is asked of all families, even if you are on the regular volunteer list, as the donations really do help support the team financially. This year we are hoping to buy a new timing and starting system.
Thanks again to everyone and GO TEST!
Brenda Green (878-3262/363-2106)
10. PARENT MEETING June 22nd
To TEST families:
We have survived the first couple days despite very freezing pool temperatures, not so seasonable weather, and over 100 TEST swimmers this season! Unfortunately, I don't think I have met every child on the team, but I'm doing my best to get to everyone.
I know that there are many, many new faces and families with us this summer, and with our first swim meet fast approaching (next Tuesday evening at Vergennes Town Pool) I think it would be wise to have an informal parent meeting during practice next Monday morning June 22nd at 7:45-8:15am. This way, most parents will be around for either pick up or drop off, and questions can be answered, things clarified, and important things organized. I hope that you will be able to make it.
Carolyn Hancock, Deb Alden and Brenda Green will be on hand to answer questions as well. If you have immediate concerns or questions, please email me. My cell phone number is 802 734 0271 if you would prefer to call.
Have a great day.
Lauren
9. Bull Pen Volunteers needed!
Hello everyone,
As it turns out I [Betsy W.] am not available to run the bullpen on June 30, July 9 or July 14. It just so happens I will be out of town on those dates. I am available for the first home swim meet, June 25, at that time I will be glad to share with volunteers how we have run the bullpen in the past.
I realize the following families have signed up: Cohen - bull pen (and 8 & under Dad), Crock - bull pen (and 8 & under Mom), Wakim - bull pen and Esposito - bull pen...it would be great to get a couple more volunteers. Please let me know if you are interested.
Thanks loads. Betsy W. 879-6971, 922-2094

6. Summer volunteers needed (and wanted)!
Greetings TEST team parents
I [Brenda G. contact info below] have volunteered to put together the volunteer schedule again this year - but I really need parents to help out by letting me know when they will be gone and what jobs they would like.
I will accommodate everyone's requests until this Sunday, June 14th. After that I will have to finalize the schedule and post it - if you are on the list and can't make it, you will have to find a replacement.
We also realize that with schedules every family cannot volunteer - if you can't, would you kindly send me an e-mail as I have other ways to help out besides volunteering at a meet.
Here is my list of volunteers to date:
Job List
Current list of volunteers
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered as of Jun 9, 2009. Contact Brenda G to add your name. If your name is on the list below and you do NOT want that position - please let Brenda G. know asap.
Timers Gunnel - Hartman - Lick - Owens - Beth Wilbur - Davis - Deb Johnson - Hayes - Socha - Jessica Workman - Green -
We really need another 10 TIMERS or our volunteers listed will have to work every meet w/no back-ups.
Score Table ? -
We do not have any volunteers for SCORE TABLE yet. This is critical that we have at least 2-3 volunteers for this position.
Bull Pen Weischedel – coordinator; Cohen – bull pen (and 8 & under Dad); Crock – bull pen (and 8 & under Mom);
Wakim - Esposito - more volunteers needed
Ribbons Tall - ribbons
We need one more RIBBON volunteer.
Runner Gilbert - runner
We need one more RUNNER volunteer.
Snack Bar Gunnel, Lyle, Seguin, more needed
We need at least two more SNACK BAR workers and at least one person to coordinate the SNACK BAR. If we had two SNACK BAR COORDINATORS, it would be better as then you could work together.
Officials Green, more needed!
I haven't heard from anyone on OFFICIALS - if you are interested in this please contact Carolyn Hancock as she can send you in the direction to get certified. Click for more information. T.E.S.T really needs more OFFICIALS as our older swimmers are graduating and it was their parents who took on this task.
Click for more information.
Click to return to this page.
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered so far and I look forward to hearing back from everyone asap. If your name is on the list and you didn't want that position - please let me know asap.
Thanks again

4. T.E.S.T Parent Letter
Dear TEST families,
Summer is fast approaching, and that means swim team is right around the corner! Personally, I am itching to get back on the deck and into the pool. I haven’t been in a pool since late April due to the UVM pool being closed for renovations and getting ready for finals and graduation. I hope you all are getting excited for this season, I think it’s going to be a good one!
For those new families who don’t know me yet, here is a little about me (Lauren) so you know who you are entrusting your children with for the summer. I am a 22 year old freshly graduated college student. I received my bachelor’s from UVM, with a nursing major. In addition to majoring in nursing, I swam for UVM for four years and was a captain during my senior season. I have lived in Essex since 1999 and am a TEST veteran. I joined the team in the summer of 2000 and began assistant coaching in 2005. I have been swimming all of my life, and have had many fabulous coaches over the years as well as opportunities to swim with very talented swimmers, and feel as though I have a lot of experience in and around the pool to bring to the table. This is my first opportunity at taking the lead, and I am excited about it! TEST and its swimmers hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to see what we can do in the pool this summer.
I have heard through the grapevine that the pool has been filled! Though the pool is a little too chilly, and weather not quite cooperative yet, it does mean that practice will begin the week of June 15th, giving us a week to prepare for the first meet of the season. Exact dates and times will be sent out in the coming week or so.
The last pre-season Champlain Valley Swim League coaches meeting was this week, and lots of things were finalized, so there are some dates that you can now mark, bold and underline on your calendar’s (other important dates and team events to be added throughout the season): The swim meet schedule is posted here and at
Tuesday June 23rd: Meet @ Vergennes
Thursday June 25th: Home vs. BCC (FOOD SHELF NIGHT)*
Tuesday June 30th: Home vs. Middlebury
Thursday July 2nd: Meet @ Winooski
Tuesday July 7th: Meet @ St. Albans
Thursday July 9th: Home vs. Knights (COTS NIGHT)*
Tuesday July 14th: Home vs. BTC
Thursday July 16th: Meet @ EDGE
Tuesday July 21st: NO MEET
Thursday July 23rd: RAIN DATE
Friday & Saturday July 24th & 25th: Champlain Valley Swim League Championships at Winooski Pool **
Saturday & Sunday August 1st & 2nd: Vermont Swimming Association Championships at Upper Valley Aquatic Center ****Food Shelf night, 6/25 and COTS night, 7/9: Community service is a huge aspect of the Champlain Valley Swim League. At two dual meets this summer, all teams in the League will participate in a community service project. On June 25th , at the meet against BCC, both teams will be asked to bring non-perishable food items to the meet to be delivered to local food shelves. On July 9th , both teams will be asked to provide much needed items to be delivered to COTS (Committee on Temporary Shelter). On these dates, all League teams will be collecting items for these organizations as well. It is hoped that our contributions as a whole will impact both the teams and the community as a whole in a positive way.
** The CVSL Championship meet (also called “Leagues”) is the crown of our season. All of the teams from our swim league come together to compete. Since all of the teams are involved it is necessary to limit the number of entries for each team. We want ALL of our swimmers to swim in as many events as possible. If you know you will NOT be attending the meet, please let the coaches know as soon as possible so they do not put your swimmer into the meet. This way the swimmers who are attending can each get as many opportunities to swim as possible. Click here for more info.
*** The VSA Championship meet (also called the “State” meet) is the only meet of the season for which a swimmer must meet a time standard (also called a “cut-time”) to attend. The coaches assume that swimmers who attain a legal cut-time will desire to attend this meet. If you know your swimmer has met a cut-time and will NOT be attending the meet, please let the coaches know. This helps save the team money as well as allows the coaches to spend their time on the swimmers who are present rather than worrying about swimmers that are missing. Click here for more info.
More information about Tuesday/Thursday evening dual meets and the League and State Championships will be available once the season starts. Please NOTE, there will be parent assignments for jobs at meets. These assignments will be emailed and/or posted at the pool once the roster is set! (Swim meets (both home and away) require parent volunteers to run smoothly and safely. All parents are expected to work at the meets. A list of parent jobs is included in the Parent Handbook and at . A schedule of job assignments is created in advance of the season to ensure that we have sufficient workers at every meet. One of our parents, Brenda Green, has graciously offered to put together our volunteer schedule. If there are meets which you are not available to work, please contact her in advance to ensure that you are not assigned a job for that evening. Once the job assignments are posted , it becomes a parent responsibility to find a substitute worker if you are unable to work.
Our team needs parents who are willing to be trained to be stroke officials. Each team must have officials at every swim meet – both home and away or the meet cannot be run. Some of our long-time officials have children who are graduating and we must have parents who are willing to be certified to replace them. For parents interested in becoming stroke and turn officials or renewing their certifications, a long-time swim parent and official, Don Weaver, will be running a clinic and examination at St. Michael's College on June 11th. More information is posted at and an email was sent out June 3rd. Information on clinics will also be posted on the CVSL web site as soon as the dates are confirmed. Please email Lauren with any questions regarding becoming an official.
There are three swimming related web sites to take note of for information regarding the team, the League, and the Vermont Swim Association:
This is the TEST team web site http://home.myfairpoint.net/vzenu5ot/test2009/ and it is in its third year and includes , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
The CVSL web site is new this summer. Check www.cvslvt.com here for information on the league including meet schedule, directions to other pools, League Championship meet information, etc.
The VSA web site – www.vtswim.org check here later in the season for State Championship meet information
TEST has been known for being one of the most fun, spirited and competitive teams in the League for many years, and I hope that we can continue this tradition this year. Let’s bleed black and red this summer! GO TEST!
Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions and concerns. See everyone on the pool deck soon!

1. 2009 Web Site!
Welcome T.E.S.T swimmers, families, friends, coaches, administrators to the 2009 T.E.S.T Web Site.
Background: When my daughter joined T.E.S.T in 2007, I was immediately impressed and befuddled by the many sources of information required to participate in this wonderful community. Since then I've volunteered my time to create and maintain this web site to manage and communicate information.
How it works: Coaches, volunteers and parents provide me with information and I post it at this web site. Yes it is that simple. Also, please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page as I make no guarantees about the accuracy or timeliness of the information even though I really do try real hard. :) My email address (no phone calls please) is stevengrindle@msn.com
What's here? The navigation buttons on each page are supposed to be self-explanatory. This is the of the site and you can always come back to this page if you get lost. Clicking on the on navigation buttons at the top of the page takes you to a different web page at this site, and some of the pages (like ) have a secondary row of navigation buttons (like ) which will take you to other pages.
So far in 2009 I have given the 2009 T.E.S.T web site a similar but slightly different look so you can distinguish the current site from last year's site.
The web address for T.E.S.T 2009 (this year's home page) is:
http://home.myfairpoint.net/vzenu5ot/test2009/ The web address for T.E.S.T 2008 (last year's home page) is:
http://home.myfairpoint.net/vzenu5ot/test2008/Please note that Fairpoint has replaced Verizon as my ISP and even though you might be redirected to the Fairpoint web address if you use the Verizon web address, that will not work for much longer so please change any old bookmarks, favorite places or notes that include the Verizon web address.
Because I have copied much of the information from last year and pasted it into this year's web site and will be updating everything as we go, use common sense when distinguishing between up-to-date and out-of-date information. Please email me with questions, revisions, corrections, inclusions and deletions.
