I certainly did NOT intend on bringing home another cat! I never would have met
Percy, had the Shelter Manager not gone out & caught a lady who had wanted to surrender 2 cats on the spot, & was
just leaving the yard, close to closing time. Surrenders are usually by appt. only. In the Med Room they drew blood from
the female, & I put her back in the kennel. I turned off one of the bright lights to keep the atmosphere calmer for the
nervous female, until the shelter worker could return. I then took out the big orange male. I kept waiting for the staff
person to come back, but they were delayed, so I ended up holding him. Even though the circumstances were scary & everything
was topsy-turvy in his world, his deep, rumbling purr filled the quiet room.
I just found myself feeling so at home holding him,
kissing him on top of the head. At one point, I thought I could detect that he was not neutered, but it wasn't until I
sat him down, that I realized what I had felt was a bobbed-tail! :-o
I have never been particularly drawn to red cats...don't know why. There has never been
a red cat amongst the many cats who've lived with me over the years but- here I was smitten with a red cat, & one
with no tail, to boot!
Ultimately, Percy came home to join his new brothers & sisters. For many months I thought that, for the
first time ever, my sound judgement had failed me. Percy was quick to take over, and bullied everyone terribly. It took
many months of patience, positive reinforcement and love to change things around. He has become a real silly
boy, and likes to play. He and Abbie are wrasslin' partners. He loves his new Mom immensely, & is eager to please.
He has an endearing personality & cute little quirks. Quite a character! He hops like a bunny when he runs,
too! He's a big, heavy fellow, at abt. 12 lbs., and is abt. 6 yrs. old. He has the nickname of "Percy, the Big
Red Bear"... he's such a big guy.... but if you heard the high-pitched meow that emanates from that burly body...
you'd double over laughing! Favorite things: ME!, the sound of a zip-top can; playing "sausage kitty"
under the covers every morning. He teases me to throw the sheet over him and tuck it close to his sides... thus "sausage
kitty", lol.
Below: Sir Percy Puffy Pants! Relaxing after some playtime. With those fluffy
britches, & pompom tail, he looks like a bunny from behind!
Below: Showing off that red pom-pom of a tail. What a pretty shade of red his coat is. His
middle name, Arun, means "reddish" in Sanskrit.
