Some ask why I chose to bicycle the entire length of the Erie Canal. For one thing, it sure beats sitting on my butt creating these web pages and for another, activity makes my body feel better. As for why I picked the Canalway Trail, most of it is level, but this trip also involved road travel where the trail is not yet completed and that means occasional hills. Odd that the only two hills I walked up were encountered on the final leg of the ride and actually located on the trail, not on roads.

During the course of my eight day solo adventure (7 days riding and 1 day waiting for a weather system to move on) I met some wonderful people, saw some beautiful scenery, wild animals, deer, birds and more rabbits than I've seen since leaving Arizona back in 1981. But, the one thing that amazed me above and beyond all else was this: My body gave me everything I asked of it without complaining. I am unable to explain why I get emotional over that fact, but none-the-less, grateful this was so.

For the few unfamiliar with the location of the trail, this map may help. The ride began in Tonawanda and ended in Waterford. A couple of sincere thank-yous need to go out here, one to David Somero who drove the 401 mile distance to place me at the starting point of this adventure and one to Tim Lampinen for picking me up and bringing me home. Thank you both for making this trip possible.
