"Gotta Have Gadgets"

By Mike Conrad

Get ready for the next golf season with the "Gotta Have Gadget" the Momentus Golf Trainer.

OK, a little about myself before we start. My name is Mike Conrad and I am a "gadget guy". You know the kinda guy who watches an infomercial at 2:00am after a night of drinking and thinks, "that is the best thing I have ever seen!" My credit card statement is full of ridiculous charges of man toys I thought I had to have. This column will review some of these gadgets and save you from credit card charges from late night infomercials trips to Brookstones, Best Buy or the Sharper Image.

When it comes to golf, I have tried every training video, swing improver or club that is supposed to turn me into the next Tiger Woods. Now I should tell you I am no slouch when it comes to golf. I regularly shoot 18 holes in the low to mid 80's. I've been playing golf since I was 10 years old, this year I will turn 42. During seasons where I play more, I will shoot consistently in the low 80's. I'm invited to play in scramble tournaments all the time because I can drive the ball 275-325 yards. I have yet to find a product to turn me into the next Tiger, but I have actually found a gadget that did improve my game. It's called the Momentus Golf Club. Last season just about this time I invested in a Momentus 5-iron after watching an infomercial on the golf channel.

The club arrived within the next 7 days as promised. The first thing I did was to watch the instructional DVD to make sure I was using it correctly. The Momentus is a weighted 5-iron designed to make you swing on the proper golf plane. My first thought was, "even if this thing doesn't work it will help loosen me up before a round of golf". After watching the instructional DVD, I learned I needed to start my training by moving this club forward before I start my swing. Now this is not a natural movement for anyone who plays golf. However, once I moved it about 10 inches forward, I felt a smooth backswing and instantly felt where the club should travel. The beauty of this club is that it is shorter than a standard club, so I had no problem swinging it in my office at work. I had decided if I swing this club for about 10 minutes a day during the off-season, it could possible change my swing before my first round. If I were going to change my swing, January/February would be the perfect time to do it. You don't want to try to change your swing in the middle of the golf season. That would make for a miserable season. So if this thing was going to work I should see it in my first couple of rounds.

So each day I went into work, I would start my day by swinging the Momentus. Every couple of weeks I would watch the DVD again just to make sure I was training properly. This was the first training device I actually felt like it was doing some good. So for a solid 8 weeks I swung the Momentus in my office getting ready for the new season. If you remember March 2006, you may recall here was a 70 degree day on March 31. Well, March 31st happens to be my birthday, so I decided to treat myself to a round of golf. Typically my first round I will shoot around a 95 for 18 holes. It takes a couple of rounds before I get into the 80's. When I was on the first tee, standing over the ball I just felt more comfortable and confident that I would be swinging on the proper plane. The first drive of the season was 295 yards down the middle of the fairway. I though maybe it was just because I kept swinging through the off-season. I really noticed my new swing when I was playing my long irons. I was just hitting the ball more solid than I have ever hit them, even when I was playing every other week. At the end of the day, I looked at the scorecard and I shot an 85. This was the first time I broke 90 for my first round of the season.

I was thinking could this Momentus have changed my swing that much? Each time I played last season I was hitting the ball more solid and building my confidence. I started telling friends about the Momentus. It wasn't until I played in a tournament in August when two guys who I hadn't been out with in a year told me they have never seen me swing so smooth.

So if you are looking to improve your golf swing, I will say with confidence that the Momentus Golf Swing Trainer is a &"Gotta Have Gadget!"
